Alliance Autosport Makes Successful USF2000 Debut With Scott RettichAlliance Autosport
Alliance Autosport and team driver Scott Rettich leave Florida as the top Formula Enterprises competitor in the USF2000 National class. Scott Rettich is currently second in the National class championship standings and a very small amount behind the leader after the first four rounds of the 2012 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.
The first race weekend started off well for the 2011 SCCA Pro Racing Formula Enterprises Championship team and driver as Scott Rettich was the fastest competitor in the National class during the first test session. The team carried that momentum into qualifying with Rettich qualifying fastest among the Formula Enterprises competitors and third overall in the National class. During race one, Rettich drove the PDI Communication Systems #71 into the lead and led until two laps to go when he was slowed by traffic, lost the lead, and had to settle for a second place finish. Starting positions for race two were determined by fastest race lap from race one, which meant Rettich started race two in fifth. The Alliance Autosport entry lost ground to the National class leaders early as he had to avoid a couple of on track incidents, but he regrouped and moved up from fifth to third on the final restart with a bold pass in turn one on what would be the last green flag lap of the race.
“The racing at Sebring was certainly very intense,” stated Scott Rettich. “The Alliance Autosport team gave me a very fast car all weekend and we certainly wanted to come away with a couple of wins, but a second and third are still strong finishes, especially given how competitive the National class is this year.”
After Sebring, the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda traveled to St. Pete for rounds three and four. After running in the top three during both practice sessions, Rettich took the overall National class pole in Qualifying. Starting the race one 19th overall, first in the National class, Rettich unfortunately had to nearly come to a complete stop to avoid a pileup in turn two on the first lap and fell from first to seventh in class. After the incident on the first lap, Rettich turned in some very fast laps and moved up to his eventual finishing position of third. Race two saw the competitors start the race on a damp track. Rettich managed the slippery track conditions well and moved up from third to second and was closing the gap on the leader when a full course caution came out. Rettich had a good restart, passing two of the Championship class cars between himself and the National class leader. With two laps to go, the remaining Championship class competitor between Rettich and the leader nearly spun in turn one causing Rettich to go wide to avoid him, allowing two National competitors by. This pushed Rettich back to 4th where he would ultimately finish.
“We showed really good speed here at St. Pete,” stated Scott Rettich. “We were ecstatic to qualify on the overall pole in the National class! Unfortunately, the races didn’t go quite the way we wanted them to, but we kept the car in one piece and collected some more valuable championship points. It was an awesome experience competing at St. Pete in front of such large crowds. I have to thank Dan Anderson for allowing the Formula Enterprises class into the series and also all of the series officials for putting on such a great event! ”
